There is a special power in making something by hand. The maker always puts a little bit of themself in whatever they are making. The people that understand this use it to increase the power of the objects they make. Most of the time people use it passively. They know its there but don't have a specific purpose in mind when they make something. But once in a while something comes up that needs an extra boost of power.
The prayer shawl movement has taken this to heart. The person making the shawl prays for healing or comfort or whatever it is that the recepiant needs while they work on the shawl. It can be taken to another level if the maker understands the power they are using. Including symbols that represent the wanted outcome or the people involved can add to the power.
A heart to show the person is loved, a teddy bear to show a child is cared for, flowers to show caring, or more personal things like a name or a personal symbol all can add an extra layer of power.
For example, I am working on a project to bring a little girl home. Friends and I are make a blanket for her. We are crocheting and knitting squares that will be put together in a blanket when we have enough. The first square done was a heart.
We are including symbols for all the people involved. There are symbols for what we believe in and symbols for the little girl we want to come home. Every stitch in the blanket is made with the intention to bring the girl home. I have no doubt in my mind that this little girl will come back home.
With any project of this kind, intention is very important. Good intentions bring good results. Bad intentions bring worse results. And always remember, everything comes back on the maker, good or bad.

Update on the Project...
We have been working on the squares and we have also been teaching others to make them :) so busy we have been... but we have more done and try to work on them a little every day.
This one and the blue/gray one are 2 different stitches but the pictures make it hard to see the textural differences.
This has a neat lace pattern in it :)
and the purple one has a flower motif .
This has several names, I will call it the celtic knot here
The last 2 are personal symbols or bind runes for people (more on why later) as the next post planned is about the power of something handmade. Each of these people have had a hand in making it in some way also, even if they have not made a square, they will be helping with the blocking and layout (or in the case of the little ones making more work for us, but trying to help :)
